5 Unknown Causes of MD Burnout and How to Reverse It [Limitless MD, Episode 25]

Isn’t it a wonder how surgeons can perform long hours in the operating room and still manage to enthusiastically announce to an agitated family member when it’s over that the operation has been successful? Or how, after hours of making rounds, a doctor still patiently awaits every patient that knocks and looks forward to another day doing the same routine. It’s amazing to see a man in action, passionately pursuing the things he loves and living up to his purpose.
When you see the opposite, their energy seems to rub on you and you feel their stress and tiredness pierce deep through your bones. You get burned out, too. The question is, what makes a doctor feel burned out despite doing the things he worked hard and studied hard to pursue? It is important to get to the root of this question because that’s the only way a solution can be drawn out to address it.
“As you hit your goal, as you hit your dream, it is important to continue to have different goals and dreams, bigger goals, bigger vision, and you need to always be striving towards something.”
